Fire extinguisher: replace every 5–15 years
This item can be easy to forget because it lasts a while, but you should check the pressure gauge monthly to see if it’s in the green zone. If it’s not, it’s time to service or replace your extinguisher.
Kitchen sponges: replace every week
Kitchen sponges (which are often used multiple times a day and typically remain damp) are hot spots for bacteria and should be changed weekly.
Bed pillows: replace every 1–2 years
The National Sleep Foundation recommends replacing pillows every 1-2 years, as daily use leads to a build up of common allergens like dust mites.
Nonstick cookware: replace every 3–5 years, depending on the material
Replace nonstick cookware every 3 to 5 years, or right away if it becomes damaged. You can also consider seasoning your nonstick cookware to make it last longer.
Toothbrushes: replace every 3–4 months
The American Dental Association recommends replacing toothbrushes every 3-4 months, or sooner if your brush is frayed or showing other signs of wear. Allow your toothbrush to air dry in an upright position, as storing a wet toothbrush in a container can lead to bacteria growth.
